In
May, TLIA awarded our annual week-long camperships to two fourth graders
from Poland Community School to attend the well-known Maine Conservation
Camp at Bryant Pond. Johanna Moody and Mimi Carmichael’s
essays were picked from a field of twenty-nine entries by TLIA members
Marion and Clair Chesley. The girls are very pleased to be given the
scholarships (TLIA sponsors them at $450 each, the families pay $25).
They will attend either the Junior Explorer or Natural Explorer
sessions.Junior Explorers learn about the
powers of observation and gain confidence in outdoor experiences. They
will fish, learn basic first aid and outdoor safety, gain confidence to
map and compass skills, and understand lake ecology.
Natural Explorers focuses on ecology and nature
studies. While building an appreciation for our natural world, they
will participate in a Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife
monitored Boating Safety Education Program.
We congratulate our ’05 essay winners and thank the
teachers and judges for their help. We look forward to Mimi and
Johanna’s “Letters from Camp.”
