32nd Annual Meeting Lauds Winners

There were winners galore at TLIA’s 32nd Annual meeting held July 9, 2005 at the Ricker Memorial Library.  Surprise awards were given to several people for work done for the Organization in past years, and gifts to over thirty people who had winning raffle tickets.  The Annual raffle, chaired by Peg and Dick Harris, reaped over $800.

Richard Smith was given the Babs Shapiro Conservation award, Gerry Judson the Community award and Ed Hinkley, retiring Board member par excellance, was awarded a plaque for his involvement and dedication to TLIA. Ed has also been ad man for the Newsletter, earning enough in sales to cover the cost of the Newsletters.
Announcement was made of a new plaque for the Memorial Bench at the Public Beach,  which now  includes the name of our former secretary, Paula Smith, who passed away the beginning of the summer. It had been Paula’s idea to install the bench with names of the original Board engraved on an attached plaque.

New officers were installed:  Howard Sherman will replace Ed Hinkley on the Board and Susan Barry and Jamie Rothfus will be co-secretaries for the next year, trying to fill Paula’s shoes.

Drew Rothfus, passed out pamphlets and delivered gifts to winners.  We thank this young man for his help and dedication to TLIA.

John Laskey gave a report on the State of the Lake, describing the lake monitoring program which he and George Kelley  perform every two weeks.  He tests water temperature and water clarity with a Secchi disc (which he demonstrated).  The latest tests showed water clarity going down to 25 feet (not great), but he attributes this to heavy rains which churned up the lake. Oxygen levels near the bottom decrease to low levels during the late summer but improve in the Fall, when winds and the natural turnover of the lake change the picture, bringing  more oxygen to the bottom.

John emphasized that we need to avoid phosphorus buildup…buffering and preventing runoff is important.  He also described a practice he’s noticed at the boat launch;  some people with big boats “power launch” stirring up the bottom and releasing sediment into the water.  It’s important not to power launch, to move slowly into the lake until the boat’s about 300ft. out.  A sign will be erected at the boat launch requesting this.

Linda announced the need for two people to be plant patrollers on the lake.  Identifying invasive plants is of utmost importance and whoever volunteers should attend an Invasive Plant Workshop.  Richard Smith volunteered and Mike Shapiro volunteered to help him.  Rick Lundstedt was also interested.  He and Mike will attend a workshop in August.  Richard will try to attend one next year.

Other volunteers are needed as beach monitors, boat inspectors, Cookbook committee, Family Picnic committee and Video people for the Camp History project.

The Treasurer’s report was given by Richard Barry and Linda Laskey thanked those who had worked on different committees.  Linda  Laskey and Judy King, co-presidents, will remain on board for two more years. Jacqui Misenheimer will work on designing note cards as a new TLIA project.   Gerri Tinkham distributed new lake maps, with names of all who live on the lake.  Ellie and George Kelley were thanked for hosting the meeting, setting up coffee and goodies for an early breakfast.  Volunteers will be needed next year to help set up.  Ruth Desjardins offered to find a program for next year’s meeting.

Judy King reported on the COLA meeting (Congress of Lake Association) she attended.  Keeping the lake in balance;…lake food webs… is important.  Mercury levels are a concern;  Mercury arrives in Maine lakes via emissions from factories in the mid-West.  High mercury levels in fresh water fish call for legislation to protect children.  Guidelines for eating fresh water fish are available on the USDA website.  Also, a Lake Smart program will be offered next year, free of charge, to help people design buffers.

Jamie Rothfus announced she will put together a road race to raise funds for TLIA.  There are many runners and walkers on the lake and this would give them a purpose.  She’ll seek help from the Poland Recreation Dept.

The main speaker was Scott Segal, new Recreation Director for the Town of Poland.   He’s interested in helping all groups in the Town, including Senior citizens.  He’ll listen to all requests and do his best to comply.  Julie Mocciola works with him as does Beach Helper, Jessa Michaels.

The cover of a newly published book by Bob Chapman of Poland, A Certain Fall, was designed by Gene Fuller, a local artist and member of TLIA.  Check it out at your local library.

Scott Williams, aquatic biologist, will again test the lake on alternate years, for certain tests that John cannot do.  This will build a profile of our lake and of its health.

It was announced that Art Dunlap, CEO for Poland, has a new part-time assistant.  Bill Willette will help in any way he can.  Don’t hesitate to call his office if you’ve questions about special projects.  Most projects in  Shoreland zoning need permits. Please call and check before doing anything.

The Newsletter is posted online shortly after each issue is published.  Many thanks to our webmeister Larry Lee.  Our website is www.tripplake.com.

It was voted to continue to buy liability insurance for TLIA: cost $868 per year.  It was also voted to maintain membership in COLA for $200;  we are represented in Me. legislature through this vehicle.   The group voted to donate $1000 to Michelle Garcia’s high-school class to do research on the lake in the next year.  It was also voted to send a donation to the Ricker Library for use of the meeting room: $100.

The meeting was adjourned at noon.  Next year’s meeting will be on Saturday, July 8, at 8:30 a.m.  Mark your calendars now.
