"Angus"...World’s Tallest Snowman

If you didn’t get to Bethel this winter, you missed one of western Maine’s premiere events. Billed as the World’s Tallest snowman and named "Angus" after our independent governor Angus King, this giant figure reached 113’ 7" and made the Guinness Book of Records.

Built by the Bethel Chamber of Commerce as a marketing device, it attracted thousands of winter sports enthusiasts. Completed on Feb. 19, it weighed in at 9,000,000 lbs. and contained 200,000 cubic feet of snow. It’s eyes were 4’ wreaths, its smile 5 auto tires and its carrot nose constructed of 6’ of chicken wire and muslin. The 20’ hat and 120’ scarf were of fleece, his buttons 3 skidder tires and 20’pine trees became arms.

By mid-March, the weather warmed up and he began bending backwards, sort of a "leaning tower of Bethel", first losing his head and then, ever so slowly, his torso. The Chamber’s taking bets as to when the last puddle of Angus will disappear. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. Could you top this?
