WATERSHED MANAGEMENT PLAN PUBLISHED
|
|
The
long-awaited Watershed Management Plan was published at the end of the
summer and officially introduced to the public on September 11 during
Poland Community Day. The water quality management plan was developed
by property owners in Poland, members of TLIA and municipal officials.
Roberta Hill of Lake and Watershed Resource Management Associates wrote
the Plan, and staff from the Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water
Conservation District and the Maine Department of Environmental
Protection provided guidance.
Committees have met over the past 2 ˝ years, reviewing
results of surveys and public meetings. The results are listed in the
Plan as ideas, concerns and actions which will provide us with
direction in the coming years and as a way in which we, the Lake
Community, can convert these recommendations into action.
The Management Plan Leadership Committee consisted
of twelve people: Susan Carbone (TLIA) Arthur Dunlap (Town of
Poland), Phoebe Hardesty (AVSWCD), Roberta Hill (LWRMA) Ferg Lea (AVCOG),
Laurie Levine (Tripp Lake Watershed), Jessie Mae MacDougall (MDEP),
Nancy McCann (TLIA), Barbara Shapiro (TLIA), Bill and Gerri Tinkham (TLIA)
and Scott Williams (LWRMA). |

The Board members will each bring
three priorities from the Plan to the Spring Board Meeting, and three of
the total will be addressed next year. Look for more information in the
Spring Newsletter.
The plan includes cultural and
historical information about the area as well as natural resource data,
relevant state and local ordinances as well as maps and statistics on
local population growth. The project was funded by a grant from the
MDEP and the USEPA with additional funds provided by the Tripp Lake
Improvement Association.
The booklet is attractive,
well-written and something of which we should be very proud. It should
be in all members’ hands by next summer. A number have been given to
Town Officials, one copy was placed in the Ricker Library and others
distributed to Board members. Some Town officials have hailed it as one
of the most complete resources they’d ever seen. If you would like a
copy before next summer, please contact Linda Laskey at (207)998-4227 or
e-mail her at ormpoland@prexar.com. She’ll be happy to forward one
to you free of charge. |
