POLAND REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER GETS GRANT TO HELP TRIPP LAKE

Take one great science teacher, Michelle Garcia, who plans a comprehensive science curriculum on Fresh Water for her ten junior/seniors, who researches and writes, jumps through all the paper “hoops” of our educational age and gets a grant to work with TLIA, Phoebe Hardesty (AVSWCD) and DEP staffers, to conduct a Service Learning Project on Jordan Shore Drive.
TLIA has long been concerned with steep bankings along the Drive which have eroded and aren’t able to prevent runoff from going into the lake.  Michelle’s students will be planning how best to reduce erosion by installing plant material and then teaching others about their work.

They will first gain permission from landowners living at 130-134 Jordan Shore Drive.  The work will start May 5 from 9-10:30 a.m. with an initial student visit, then May 17th for a second planning session.  May 27th, from 8-2, will be the actual work day.

We hope you will encourage this group by stopping to talk with them about their work in our watershed.  Please understand that the grant asks that a sign be placed at the work site describing details.  We sincerely thank Ms. Garcia and her students for all the work involved in this great project.
