KAYAK WORKSHOP HELD ON JULY 24

The first Kayak Workshop sponsored by TLIA was held at the Public Beach on July 24,  a windy, chilly morning.  Tom Coffin and his wife Claudia of the Johnson Hill Road in Poland instructed the attendees on the rules and common sense of paddling kayaks.

Checksheets were passed out with rules of safety listed, as well as what to do if disaster strikes.   Lifejackets are lifesavers and the # 1 rule was to wear them.  They also advised to know your area and its obstacles, not to paddle further than one can handle, beware of the elements and use SPF 45 in the sun.  “Don’t panic” is his advice in case you tip over.  Learning how to right a kayak is important…let the boat do what it’s supposed to do and you’ll be fine. Kayaking is good exercise and is lots of fun.

Tom Coffin addresses Judy & Dell King, Dick & Peg Harris, Ruth Desjardins, Linda Laskey and Claudia Coffin at workshop.

John Mangini, kayaker par excellance!

The demonstration was held on the beach as it was too windy on the water. (Rule #8…don’t be too bold on a bad day!)  Those in attendance were Judy and Dell King, Linda Laskey, Colleen Lebel, Peg and Dick Harris, Ruth Desjardin and Babs Shapiro. Everyone there learned something.

Another workshop will be scheduled for next summer;  the date will be announced in the Spring Newsletter and at the Annual Meeting on July 9, 2005.  We hope more will attend.  It’s well worth it.

John Mangini should have attended kayak workshop.
