TRAHANT COTTAGE DESTROYED BY FIRE

On August 29, shortly after the Trahant family had opened their camp for Labor Day weekend, a fire erupted. It was quickly sighted and called in by several people around the lake. Firefighters arrived within minutes to battle the blaze at the end of Pond Road. Unfortunately, the camp burned flat, just 20 minutes after the family had turned on the electricity and hot water. They’d gone grocery shopping and returned to find the cottage leveled.

Propane tanks had exploded, sending flames high into nearby trees. High winds started to spread the flames but the firefighters managed to contain the blaze, despite the shortage of water. Access to the lake was very limited.

Neighbors and lake dwellers flocked to the scene in a flotilla of boats, watching the scene, helpless to do anything. Offers of help were forthcoming the next day. Mr. Judson, owner of Hemlock Camping area, offered the family a free mobile home for the remainder of the week. They declined, staying at a nearby motel, instead.

It’s believed the camp will be rebuilt in the next year.
