The Board voted overwhelmingly to continue our Annual Cleanup on the day following the Annual meeting. "It’s no big deal", they concurred. Not only is it good for the Lake, but it feels good afterwards. We’re fortunate to have had seventeen caring people continue as stewards of the Lake, who willingly raked, picked up and filled bags of trash-- hardly a glamorous job.

Cleanup Day, held this year on July 12, began at 8 a.m. at the Public Beach and concluded two hours later. New faces are always welcomed and this year Marjorie Kneeland brought her two grandchildren, Patrick and Kim, to assist. Also present cleaning the Beach was newcomer Scott Shapiro. His sister Jamie Rothfus and her three children, Anna, Talia and Drew detailed Garland Swamp Road. Other helpers were Nancy and Charlie Rodway—Jordan Shore Drive, Marlilyn and Rick Sidle— Winterbrook Road area, Ed Perreault and Norm Zaniboni—Cove and Lake, Peg and Dick Harris, Island area and Lake, and yours truly-- old Rt. 11.

I wrote Richard Chick, Town Manager, of our volunteerism and noted that picnic tables and outhouses were in better condition than last year, but outhouses could still be cleaner. Rusting fencing should be removed…it’s an eyesore and could be the source of bloodpoisoning if someone scratched themselves on it. I found buried soap in the sand and suggested signage be erected including the words NO SOAP IN THE LAKE. Ed and Norm picked up partially submerged, floating trees, branches and dock sections, potential dangers to boaters.

It was a good morning’s work and we thank, sincerely, all those good souls who contributed their efforts.

We invite more of you to participate next year…it’s fun (really!) and creates a feeling of accomplishment.
