THE 1834 MEETINGHOUSE

By Marion Emery

Over 200 years ago, in October of 1798, after organizing a church, neighbors in the Megquier Hill area of West Poland gathered for services in private homes, barns and groves.

In 1834, the present Megquier Hill Meetinghouse was built by community neighbors under the leadership of the Reverend James Libby. He remained as pastor of the First Free Will Baptist Church for some 34 years. The land for the Meetinghouse and its nearby cemetery was donated by John Megquier.

By 1900, the large Advent Church congregation had ceased and for the next fifty years little activity was evident. Then the Church of the Nazarene re-opened the Meetinghouse. Various denominations have been housed there in the following years until 1998.

Since then, the church has been opened to the public on three yearly occasions and the services in the beautiful old Meetinghouse have been conducted by area clergy. The remaining service for this year will be a Christmas Service on Wednesday, December 13, 2000 at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

The warmth and friendliness of this historic Meetinghouse will be welcoming the many folks who come together to enjoy the beauty of the holiday season in this special place, where two centuries of worshippers have come.
