The Tripp Lake Red Hot Mammas, a local group of the Red
Hat Society, met the beginning of July at the home of Big Momma Judy
King. Members decided on a schedule of events for the summer. All
agreed that the focus of all trips should be enjoyment and social
interaction. All members take pleasure in dressing in their best red
and purple outfits, with many original red and purple hats made by them.
The initial outing was a trip to Poland Spring
Preservation Park. Everyone enjoyed lunch at Sadie’s, located above the
Poland Spring Museum. Afterwards, the ladies toured the museum and its
many interesting displays. The highlight of the day was a visit to the
Maine State Building where our tour guide elaborated on the fascinating
background of the building. It was originally built for the 1893
World’s Fair in Chicago and subsequently shipped to Poland Spring and
reassembled. All Souls Chapel, built in 1912, also provided an
interesting visit for everyone.
Paula Smith coordinated a trip to Great Diamond
Island. Our group met at the Casco Bay Lines terminal in Portland, then
boarded the ferry for Great Diamond where we disembarked for the Diamond
Edge Restaurant, a short walk from the pier. Lunch was made even more
enjoyable by the fabulous views of Casco Bay and the harbor. After a
delicious lunch, we once again returned on the ferry to Portland.
A visit to Julian’s Restaurant in Gray was our next
adventure. Afterwards, members stopped at the nearby Marden’s to find
the best bargains.
Peggy Harris and her husband Richard were our hosts
for a luncheon for members and their guests on their private island on
Tripp. Some of us arrived by boat, others Peggy and Richard ferried
over from the mainland on their boat. Everyone was anxious to explore
the island and the Harris’ summer retreat. Richard cooked a delicious
beef roast on an open pit and members brought side dishes. It was a
memorable afternoon and the end of the Red Hot Mammas social season.
All members look forward to the summer of ’05 and
their Red Hat Mammas adventures!
