ON THE WATER

By Rick Lundstedt

Spring 2003

Winter is actually over ….and Spring is here …..a time to look to the future, especially for camp owners and outdoors people. As I write this in early May, everything is heading in the right direction. Water is warming, bugs are hatching (mixed blessing), fish are moving. Last weekend the water was between 50 and 55 degrees. We spotted a couple of fish but they still looked like they were in a Mrs. Paul’s commercial rather than actively feeding. This weekend should be better and by the time you read this, our lake should be "hot" ! While this year’s April 21 ice out was later than normal, the temperature of the subsequent days also factors greatly into the feeding and spawning schedules. A few dedicated folks have been keeping Ice-out dates dating back from 1924. Jack Quinn and Linda Laskey provided the raw data which I converted into a graph. It presents an interesting picture. First you’ll notice a significant and obvious warming trend in the past 80 years. The trend line shows a clear pattern of earlier ice-out dates as the years progress. There are many other "patterns" that can be garnered from the graph / data, but the next most interesting is the "lack of association" between years. An early ice-out one year does not necessarily relate to an early ice out the next year. In fact, early follows early and late follows late only about one-third of the time. If it were totally random, the link would occur approx one half the time. The conclusion drawn from this is that it is more likely that we will experience year to year swings with a general trend toward early. Let’s see what the next 80 years tells us !

Our long winter was happily interrupted by a January trip to Islamorada (Keys) Florida. They were experiencing a historically colder than normal winter also, but cold there is still nice in comparison. The cold adversely affected the Bonefish and Tarpon (zero in the area, not even at Robbie’s "Feed the Tarpon" docks) but the Redfish and Sailfish actually like colder water. Anna teamed up with our friend Heather to catch a nice Sail during our offshore charter. We were trolling 4 lines with fresh Ballyhoo when the right outrigger tripped…a strike ! Almost immediately, the left stern bait was hit….a double (we thought) !

Captain Jack, Anna Lyon and friend Heather display their Sailfish

So here we are… boat pitching and rocking, Anna battling 1 Sail (me holding her belt to prevent swimming) and Heather fighting another…John and the mate pulling in the other 2 lines to avoid confusion (as if there wasn’t enough already !). About 5 minutes into the fight, the captain barks….. "bring ‘em together…bring ‘em together !!". This confused all but the mate, who by now had figured out what was happening. Capt’n Jack wanted the girls to bring their rods and lines together so he could see the angles better. His next direction was "reel up…pump..reel up…pump…both at the same time !!’). Now we have Anna and Heather in synchronized fish fighting mode. While we thought that the lines were tangled ……they actually hooked the same fish ! The Sail erupts from the blue, tailwalking, trying to shake free. It put on a show but lost the battle as 2 New England girls proved too much for it to handle !

On the home front, looking forward to a good year on Tripp and area lakes / ponds. So much water…so little time ! Fish and Game stocked 350 Landlocked Salmon, 200 12 – 14" Brown Trout and 25 Brood Browns last fall. Remember, Tripp is also on the fall stocking schedule of 400 12 – 14" Brown Trout starting this fall. If they survive the warm water, questionable oxygen, bass and pickerel, we could have a viable trout fishery ! Will also be trout fishing and canoeing on the Androscoggin River near Bethel. Anna and I may try to sample some Striper fishing near Portland. If anyone is interested in a 4 – 6 person charter this summer, let me know. Many camps have sold during the year so we’ll be seeing many new faces on the lake. New folks …… welcome ….this is a great lake with great people. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do !! As always, I’ll be seeing you all…on the water !
