HUNTING GOODWILL: TLIA
AWARDS CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS TO TWO POLAND STUDENTS
|
| The Tripp Lake Improvement
Association has awarded two $250 scholarships to students from Poland
Elementary School to attend the Maine Conservation School for one week
this summer. The winners, Taylor Girouard and Lori Robinson, both fourth
graders, were picked as the result of an essay contest entitled,
"Why you’d like to attend The Maine Conservation School and what
you hope to bring back to the community." The essays were read by
TLIA members Linda Laskey, John Laskey and Marion Emery, all former
teachers, along with the assistant principal, Mrs. Provost. The winners
were awarded framed certificates by Mrs. Laskey prior to spring
vacation. |

| Maine Conservation School, an
overnight camp located in Bryant Pond, Me., on the shores of Lake
Christopher, has served as a hands-on learning facility for over 30
years. Its goal is to build an awareness of the need for responsible
protection of natural resources.
TLIA believes that educating children in "naturalist"
surroundings will not only foster a life-long interest in conservation,
but will ultimately bring back to the community a desire to help protect
its lakes, woods and waters. The students will attend a
"Naturalist" session in August in which participants learn
forest ecology, wildlife habits and wild plant uses as well as the
importance of aquatic systems.
TLIA, now in its 28th year, felt it was time to give
something back to the community: starting with youngsters seemed most
appropriate. The Board of Directors voted in September, 2000, to
appropriate funds for this purpose. It hopes to continue and, hopefully,
expand the scholarship program in years to come.
