MISSED OUR ANNUAL MEETING? IT WAS A GOOD ONE!

Patrick, Marjory & Joseph Kneeland

There was an abundance of interesting information at TLIA’s 29th Annual meeting held on July 13 at the Ricker Memorial Library. Awards, reports, kids and speakers were presented to the group.

Special thanks and TLIA plaques were given to retiring Board members Dick Harris and Charlie Rodway and a handsome desk set given to retiring President Barbara Shapiro by emcee Ed Hinkley. All were recognized for their tireless years of work on behalf of TLIA.

The lake’s health is of primary importance. John Laskey, Volunteer Lake Monitor, reported on tests done by him and his partner, newly accredited V.L. M. George Kelly as well as the 2001 report of Scott Williams’.

All told, the lake is about the same, with depletion of oxygen appearing in late August, which stresses fish and the lake. Runoff and its attendant phosphorus must be prevented to reduce the threat of algae growth. So far, no milfoil has been discovered, but we must remain vigilant, for it has appeared in neighboring lakes. If a plant is suspicious, every effort must be made to bag it and have it checked.

Scholarship winners to the Maine Conservation School Camp were introduced by Linda Laskey, project chairperson. Three youngsters from Poland Elementary School delighted the audience with brief talks about their camp experiences.

The program will be continued next year, with the hope that TLIA members will encourage their children/grandchildren to enter the essay contest. Four children, ages 10-12, are picked for a one-week stay at the Camp. Letters with information will be mailed in early Spring of ’03.

Phoebe Hardesty of Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District, sponsor of our current Long Range Lake/Watershed Management Plan, gave a brief explanation of the Plan and its intended results. Questions were fielded and announcement was made of the Public Watershed Meeting to be held in August.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Septic Systems was the chosen topic of Septic-Tech representative Scott Samuelson and Sebago Technics representative John Toothacre. Using slides, they conducted a comprehensive presentation, with time left over for lots of questions. All speakers were awarded their choice of a TLIA t-shirt, sweatshirt or cap as a thank-you.

The newest Board member is A. Barry MacMillan who replaces Charles Rodway. She also cheerfully chairs the sales of TLIA merchandise. The nominating committee, however, was unable to find a new president or vice-president at that time, but the search will continue.

The membership voted to donate $100 to the Library for use of the room. Raffle winners were picked and next year’s annual meeting was set for the second Saturday in July. The meeting was adjourned before noon.
