Norway Spruce. This is one of the faster growing spruces and is a native of northern Europe, where it is prized as a valuable timber tree. Noted for its pendulous branching habit, dark, shiny green needles and large cones, this species does better than other spruces on poor, drier soils but will grow in wet conditions. Prefers loam. Fraser Fir. Often called southern balsam, this tree is a native of the Appalachian Mtns. Not tolerant of wet sites, it prefers cool, well drained to moist soil, and good sunlight with some shade.
