SECOND EARLIEST ICE-OUT

Waves of ice and snow:  Feb., 2002

Linda Laskey called me as soon as the ice disappeared this year. On April 1, 2002, all remnants of lake ice took a dive, the second earliest ice-out since 1924, according to record-keeper Don Keene. He added that the earliest recorded ice-out was March 25, 1981 and the average ice-out is April 19th.

It was a short winter by Maine standards, with an unusually low snowfall. However, fishermen, snowmobilers, skaters and cross-country skiiers all managed to do their thing and enjoy Tripp Lake’s winter offerings.

That’s the beauty of life in Maine…four varied, distinct seasons, each to be enjoyed and savored.
