SOURCES OF PHOSPHORUS IN THE WATERSHED

Guess Where?

Phosphorus is a naturally occurring element that is ubiquitous in the natural environment. It's everywhere!
• Present in virtually all organic matter
• Decaying vegetation
• Human and Animal waste
• Gas and oil residue
• The soil: a major source
Phosphorus is generally abundant in the soil. Concentration varies, according to soil type. Phosphorus adsorbs (sticks) to fine soil particles which are easily suspended in water. These "silts" may be carried great distances before settling out of the water. Soil erosion is a potentially significant source of phosphorus. This pollution is referred to as "non-point source pollution" or NPS because it washes into the water from indirect sources.
