POLAND HIGH-SCHOOLERS TO HELP TRIPP LAKE

How fortunate we are to have the new Poland High School nearby! With the aid of Susan Redmond, Americorps Volunteer attached to AVSWCD, the Steering Committee met with Joanne Dowd, a teacher at PHS, on March 30th to discuss the possibility of students helping us with some watershed projects. Lo and behold…a short time later, Beth Cholosh, who teaches an Ecology class, said it was a perfect fit. Approximately six students will volunteer five hours each on June 2 and June 6, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the lake, doing fieldwork at the Public Beach and at lakeside homes. They are anxious to put their textbook knowledge into practice.

The program takes planning and preparation. Cynthia Kuhns, who led us through our Watershed and Demonstration Projects, will speak to the students on May 31. She’ll explain the background of our Demo. Project, what we’ve accomplished and what we intend to do in the future. A lake representative, either Linda Laskey or myself, will also speak to them. Since these students are future environmentalists and potential stewards of our lakes, this hands-on, educational experience can only be helpful to both parties. We’re proud to be able to provide them with this opportunity and hope it will be a positive one.

We’ll need members to help "in the field" on the June dates mentioned above. If you’re available any of these days and would like to volunteer as a mentor (no special instruction needed…just your personal experience! please let me know. …Babs
