New Septic Tank TechnologyLast fall I wrote an article about gray water disposal based upon information received from the MDEP. After reading it, Art Dunlap, Poland Code Enforcement Officer, called with an exciting new development in the world of septic tanks and leach fields (always a fascinating topic to lake dwellers.) Little did I ever think Id spend so much time thinking about waste water disposal! Art was amazed at the cleanliness of the filtered water and the potential to install systems on small, older lake properties. "---SeptiTech, a firm in Gray, Me., has designed systems for solving septic problems commonly associated with Maines "problem" sites such as poor soils, proximity to ledge or water frontage or lack of space. SeptiTech processing works by cleaning wastewater to very high levels before it is discharged to a leach field. If this technology is used, the State of Me. has granted major concessions with respect to leach field size and depth. This makes it far easier to custom-fit a leach field to small lots (75% smaller) and dramatically reduces installation expense. Its a maintenance-free system and the treated water is so clean that a leach field will not plug up or fail, thus insuring a permanent solution to the homeowners septic requirements.---" Again, the first step in addressing any septic problem should be to contact a professional site evaluator. The State has a list of site evaluators (207-287-5695) as do the yellow pages (see "Soil Consultants"). I have a few brochures from the company and would be happy to let anyone borrow them. Or you can call or e-mail them directly for information at (207) 657-5752 or Zeropollut@aol.com. The company has installed some systems on small lakes in the Gray/New Gloucester area and would be happy to arrange a site visit if interested. B.S. |
