SEPTIC TANK TECHNOLOGY---CONTINUED

We continue to give advice on septic tanks because it’s a simple method of dealing with one facet of pollution, point pollution, as opposed to NPS or non-point source pollution.

It’s imperative that we have our septic systems checked regularly, especially those of older camps on small parcels of land. And there are many on our lake! The Board of Health recommends that septic tanks, for summer camps, be pumped every 5-7 years. Those of year-round homes should be pumped every 3-4 years. We keep a record of septic-tank pumpings right in our bathroom. On a wall are written the dates, companies which did the work and a description of where the tank/leachfield are located (lest we forget).

Other suggestions included adding Septic Tank Treatment once a year (available in hardware stores), root-killer if that’s a problem or yeast (one-lb. dissolved in water) 3-4 times a year for year-round homes (available at B.J’s). All these suggestions preclude the fact that your septic tank and leaching field must be in good working condition.

We repeat information from the last Newsletter: SeptiTech, a firm in Gray, ME., has designed septic systems for solving problems on sites with poor soils, proximity to ledge or water frontage or lack of space. It works by cleaning wastewater to very high levels before it is discharged to a leach field. If this technology is used, the State has granted major concessions with respect to leach field size and depth. It’s maintenance-free and insures a permanent solution to the home-owner’s septic requirements. A visit to a demonstration site can be arranged, if you’re interested. Call the company at (207) 657-5752 or e-mail them a Zeropollut@aol.com.

We don’t usually recommend one company, but this one was recently featured on "So You Think You Know Maine" with Lou McNally of Channel 8. Art Dunlap, CEO of Poland, also was impressed with their product. But check with multiple sources before making a final decision.
