by JOHN LASKEY, VOLUNTEER LAKE MONITOR

My sincerest thanks to two Tripp Lake supporters, Kristin Tardif and George Kelly, for their generosity. Kristin, representing Poland Springs Bottling Company, has donated $2500 worth of equipment for testing the lake, updating all previous equipment. As soon as the summer’s over, I’ll study the manual and learn how to use it properly! George answered my call for help at the annual meeting and has been assisting me in testing the lake all summer. For both of their contributions, we’re most appreciative.

In late August, the dissolved oxygen at the bottom of the lake was very low, but by Sept 15 it had greatly improved and was up to saturation point. The temperature of the water in September, at 32 feet, was a uniform 68 degrees from top to bottom. The clarity of the water in ’98 was about 4.0, down a bit from last year’s average of 4.7. However, El Nino and the heavy June rains were probably contributors to this condition. We’ll continue testing through October and results will be sent to the State to help compile their profile of Maine’s lakes.

Have a good winter and we’ll see you next summer.
